Next year is going to be a big one for travel. And it just might be more affordable, too.
Kayak released its travel trend predictions for 2024. While the results highlight everyone’s desire to travel internationally in the next 12 months, the report also featured one fantastic tidbit: domestic will be much more budget friendly.
“Domestic airfare will drop 16 percent in 2024 compared to 2023,” the report stated. “That means it’ll cost $461 on average to fly in the states.” And while everyone wants to travel internationally next year, the findings noted international airfare will go in the opposite direction. In fact, international airfare is expected to jump 10 percent year over year.
With all that savings on domestic flights, you may finally be able to afford a coveted upgrade, which Kayak said you likely want anyway. “The people have told us what they want, and basic economy is not it,” the trend report stated. “Premium economy and business class flight searches have seen a jump for 2024 travel.”
Beyond airfare, Kayak shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure that prices are also expected to go down across several categories, including hotels and car rentals. While flights are predicted to drop by 16 percent in price year over year, hotels are also anticipated to drop 9 percent, while car rentals are expected to decrease by 14 percent year over year.
If, however, you simply can’t get enough of international travel, Kayak said that destinations across Asia — including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Osaka — are expected to be all over our “for you page” next year. Those spots will be joined by the entire continent of Africa, which Kayak said is currently the third-highest trending region in the world. And, if you do want to book international travel, try to do so eight months in advance. That’s when flights will be at their cheapest.
