Most mornings, I’d say I’m glad to get my hands on whatever caffeinated beverage is closest. No, I’m not proud of it, but it is what it is. However, once I’ve gotten a little fix, I’m on the lookout for the good stuff. And that’s why I may just have to up and move to Portland, Oregon.
In an effort to help coffee fanatics everywhere find the perfect place to call home, Clever, a real estate listing website, put together a list of the best and worst coffee cities around America. To come to its conclusion, Clever dug into data via the U.S. Census American Community Survey, U.S. Bureau for Economic Analysis, Google Trends, Yelp, and Numbeo to determine the number of coffee shops and roasteries per 100,000 residents, the popularity of coffee-related searches in the area, the percentage of local annual income spent on buying a cup of coffee every weekday, the average price of a cappuccino, and more. It then combined the data from each metric to give a weighted average to each destination. After looking at all that information, Portland was named the top spot.
“Portland stands out for its eclectic coffee culture, boasting a coffee passion score of 91.9, which surpasses the average city’s score of 78,” Clever noted in its findings “This places Portland 18 percent above the study’s average in terms of coffee enthusiasm.”

Additionally, Clever noted that the city is home to a whopping 27.8 coffee shops per 100,000 residents, meaning a great cup is never hard to find.
As for other top destinations, Clever noted that really anywhere in California will suffice.
“The Golden State boasts an impressive trio, with San Jose, San Diego, and San Francisco taking prominent positions in our top five and Sacramento securing a place in the top 15,” the results stated. “Remarkably, not a single California city found itself in the bottom 10, proving that the love for good coffee extends across the entire state — even in Riverside, which was ranked as one of the worst coffee scenes by Americans last year.”
Other cities joining these in the top 10 are Denver in third; Providence, Rhode Island in sixth; Hartford, Connecticut in seventh; Boston in eighth; Las Vegas in ninth, and surprisingly, Seattle all the way down at No. 10.
