Finland is going all out to offer a socially distanced vacation option with the creation of a new national park in Salla, Lapland.
Set for completion sometime next year, the park will be situated north of the Arctic Circle, between the Salla Ski Resort and the Russian border.
The Salla national park will cover nearly 25,000 acres within the existing Sallatunturi Nature Reserve, in a region known as one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe.
On the other hand, there are at least 10,000 reindeer in Salla as well as various rare species, fells, old forests and swamps.
Activities will include skiing, hiking, winter walking and mountain bike trails as well as guided reindeer, husky, snowshoe, canoeing, hiking, snowmobile and fat bike tours.
“The national park project provides hope for the future — something we desperately need in the middle of the coronavirus epidemic,” said Erkki Parkkinen, the mayor of Salla municipality.
