HX, previously known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, has sent the MS Maud to the Bredo shipyard in Germany for repairs after the ship encountered a rogue wave and temporarily lost power in late December.
The wave hit the Maud on Dec. 21 while sailing toward Tilbury, U.K., from Floro, Norway. There were no serious injuries, according to the line. Guests disembarked in Bremerhaven, Germany, and HX arranged travel home for guests onboard.
HX is now arranging for repairs to the bridge due to saltwater ingress. A small number of internal guest spaces suffered minor damage, although the majority of the ship, including its engine room and hull, is undamaged, according to a spokeswoman.
The Maud, which underwent renovations in 2021, was scheduled to sail Northern Lights itineraries from the Dutch port of Ijmuiden. The Maud is expect to return to service in April.
Guests booked on the Maud from Feb. 3 to March 16 on Northern Lights itineraries can sail the same itinerary on the MS Spitsbergen, subject to availability. Guests can also rebook another voyage between January and April, including select Norway sailings with sister brand Hurtigruten, such as the North Cape Express.
Guests affected by the cancellations also have the option to receive a future cruise credit to book a new expedition for a later date or receive a full refund.
When Maud returns, the ship will sail British Isles expeditions, turn to the Arctic in June for sailings to Greenland and Iceland, and head south to Antarctica in October.
