Smithsonian Journeys, the travel program of the Smithsonian Institution, will launch a collection of active tours next February.
Smithsonian Active Journeys will focus on outdoor excursions that involve walking, hiking and biking available in 10 itineraries that will range in pace and activity level.
Among the offerings:
• Tuscany and Cinque Terre: From the hill towns of Tuscany to the mountainside villages of the dramatic Ligurian Coast, guests will experience two of Italy’s most beloved regions from the trail, hiking, walking and biking to the Cinque Terre, Lucca and San Gimignano.
• Gorillas of Rwanda: Guests will observe the mountain gorillas of Rwanda in their natural habitat, canoe past communities on the Mukungwa River and spend three days in Volcanoes National Park. A Kenyan safari extension is available.
• Glaciers and Waterfalls: This tour takes guests to Iceland’s trails, gaining a more intimate view of its magical geology as they hike across a glacier and descend into a lava tube.
• Costa Rica Treetops and Trails: Explores the tropical forests of Costa Rica from the base of Arenal Volcano to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the beach-lined jungles of Manuel Antonio National Park.
Each tour program will accommodate up to 18 travelers and will have three to five departures available in 2024, with the majority priced between $3,300 and $5,600.
Smithsonian Active Journeys will be led by local guides who will show guests a variety of ways to experience the world actively.
